Nephthys | This is from an interview with Blythe Danner, by Delicious Living magazine. Q. Can you tell us some of the alarming statistics in regard to global warming? A. If everyone in the world replaced one 100-watt lightbulb with a 27-watt compact flourescent, energy-saving lightbulb, the world would save as much CO2 as taking 7.5 million cars off the road. WOW! |
juniperb | I`ve replaced all my lightbulbs with flourescents. It has cut my electric bill dramatically as well juniperb ------------------ If having a soul means being able to feel love and loyalty and gratitude, then animals are better off than a lot of humans. ~James Herriot |

Harpyr | i have heard that. these compacts are a different sort of florescent though. i've heard that the really long tubular florescents that are in most office buildings are baad. having worked in such an office for a year, i would agree that they do indeed hurt your eyes. these compact ones are about the size of a regular lightbulb and give off a different sort of light. it's not so white and harsh. I have one in my kitchen and it doesn't bother my eyes. |
Sheaa Olein | We use energy saver bulbs in some parts of the house - need to find out the stats of energy saved with those. They are quite dim so they don't hurt my eyes which are quite sensitive. Randall | Do you mean cause eye strain or cause damage? ------------------ "Never mentally imagine for another that which you would not want to experience for yourself, since the mental image you send out inevitably comes back to you." Rebecca Clark |
Harpyr | I think the 'official' finding is that florescents cause "eye strain".. My co-worker was convinced, after working under the lights for 3 years, that the constant strain on her eyes caused her to have to change her glasses perscription more often than she had to before working there. My frustration with these energy saver bulbs is that one costs about $15! It's hard to work that into my modest budget. I would really like to switch my whole home over to them eventually, though... |

Sheaa Olein | You're right Harpyr - and yeah, those bulbs are expensive! Oh & office lights - uuurrrgh!! Randall I think they cause eye strain & damage - I really dislike harsh florescents. LS - I love that Smiley! I use the ones under 'slang' usually for my emails - still can't upload them to LL.. *sigh* ------------------ "The past is history, the future is a mystery, & this moment is a gift.. that's why it's called 'the present'." Nephthys | Harpyr, keep an eye out for sales on those lightbulbs. Costco, Home Depot and Target usually have good prices on them, for example, you can get 3 for $9.99. |
Harpyr | oo thanks for the tip Nephthys! That's a great deal. I'll keep my eyes peeled. |

Harpyr | update: not long after this discussion I went on over to home depot and got two packages of three bulbs for 9.99 each. Now almost every light in our home is eco-friendly. |
